Chapter Eleven

Levi didn’t think he’d ever tasted anything quite as delicious as Sadie’s snickerdoodle cookies. He took a second bite, savoring the sweet, vanilla taste, and the sprinkle of sugar and cinnamon over the entire cookie was almost too much to bear.

“I see you’re enjoying my cookies,” Sadie observed from her side of the table.

“I am. And you know what I think?”

“I don’t.”

“I think there’s a reason these won the blue ribbon.”

“They’ve won the award on more than one occasion. I don’t enter them in the bake-off anymore. It was time to give someone else a turn at the ribbon.”

“Can you give me the recipe for my mudder?”

“I’ll write it out for you and you can send it to her in your next letter.”

“I’m sure she’ll like that.”

He noticed her plate sitting half-eaten off to one side and wondered if she was feeling okay.

Seeing his look, she commented, “My eyes were bigger than my stomach. There was so much good food on the tables that I wanted to try it all.”

“The women in Miller’s Crossing sure know how to cook. My stomach is full.” He gave his belly a pat.

Sadie gave him one of her pretty smiles, saying, “But there’s always room for dessert.”

“Always,” he agreed. He gave her a half smile.

“I’ve heard that Jacob is serious about wanting you to stay on.”

The bluntness of her statement caught him off guard and wiped the smile off his face. One thing Levi knew for sure was that news in small communities traveled fast, and Miller’s Crossing was no exception. Sadie had been after him for days to talk more about his life and what brought him here. He wasn’t ready to discuss those parts of his life. Even though the pain of his breakup was easing, Levi didn’t want to be caught up in another relationship that would leave him broken. He still wasn’t able to trust enough to be sure about Sadie.

He still hadn’t been able to figure out if Sadie was looking to settle down or simply looking to settle.

People were beginning to clear away their plates. Some wandered off to the creek, others gathered under the shade tree and some were getting ready to play a game of softball.

“Levi.” She spoke his name so softly he almost didn’t hear her.

“Ja.”

“Will you be staying on?”

They were interrupted by a small girl whose exuberance brought a smile to his face.

“Miss Sadie, we’re ready to fly the kites! Are you coming?”

Her gaze lingered on him. Levi wanted to tell her what she needed to hear. But he couldn’t. He didn’t trust himself to open his heart. Still, he found himself wishing the outcome could be different. Maybe they were meant to be only friends.

While he pondered that thought, Sadie accepted the outstretched hand of the girl. Standing up, she gave him a look that told him she wasn’t finished with this conversation.

“Levi! Do you want to play in the softball game?” William called out to him from the field. “We need an outfielder.
